"This photograph shows my mother directing the proceedings as we cleared the garden following my daughter’s wedding reception, making good for winter. My mother has a lifetime’s interest in, and knowledge of gardening and, although suffering from dementia, has retained the ability to pass on all her tips and wisdom to the rest of the family.
The flowers in the background are Cosmos and sweet peas, which I grew from seeds especially for the wedding. I planted them in beds and containers and they flowered brilliantly all summer, making a great backdrop for the celebrations. Seeing my mother sitting peacefully and thoroughly at home in the garden inspired me to try to capture that particular moment which, to me, seemed both sad and happy."
